Time to explore the Caribbean!

So close, and yet so far!  The many islands of the Caribbean have beckoned to me for decades, and life has now afforded Caroline and me the opportunity to visit a number of these special places.  Well, I hope we get to visit.  We are currently on the Celebrity Summit which was scheduled to leave San Juan, Puerto Rico two days ago.  Yesterday morning, I woke up early to discover that we were not steaming to Saint Croix Island, but were still tied to the dock at the San Juan Cruise Port Terminal.  The captain announced that we either had navigation or propulsion computer issues.  Looks like those issues continue! The captain just made a ship-wide announcement.  "Our technical issues are taking a little longer than we expected."  Apparently we will leave tonight at 6 PM.  This also means our itinerary will be changed.  Good grief... we had lined up activities on every island, and now we have to make contact with each tour operator, bike rental shop, and dive shop and see what can work.

A view from the Tres Palmas Inn in San Juan.  Wonder where it got its name?

The weather in Logan is decidedly different.  It snowed right after we left, and looks like it is still snowing.  It is always amazing to me that you can get in a plane and shortly end up in a place with very different weather.

A look at Old Main and the Quad at USU at 6 AM.

We did have a chance to bike and walk around a bit of San Juan.  One thing that was very pronounced was how easy it was to spot cats.

We stopped and chatted with staff at one vet clinic, and it seemed they weren't keen on trap-neuter-release, although there were at least 2 colonies within a few blocks of their office.  I sensed they thought the quality of life for these cats was low, and that euthanasia was a better option (who would pay for the trapping and injection was not clear).

The beaches had numerous signs indicating that sea turtles nested there.  From the signs, it seemed the species were leatherbacks and loggerheads, although I would expect green sea turtles here.

A final announcement... we would leave about 10 PM!  And we did!  As I finish this commentary, we are on our way to Curacao Island. The adventures continue!

Waiting for a pizza in San Juan.

Local brew!
